    WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP?

The Internship Program at South Seattle Community College is a core part of our curriculum. Internship is a structured and supervised career-related credit-bearing experience that promotes the integration of classroom theory with practice in the workplace. Different from jobs, internships are temporary positions that provide training for a future career.

For Students Internships foster a spirit of independence and initiative, and provides students the opportunity to develop confidence in their abilities and establish important links within their chosen career industry or profession.

For Employers internships provide fresh, enthusiastic, productive student interns and an opportunity to evaluate prospective employees, virtually risk free.

HOW LONG DOES AN INTERNSHIP LAST?

Internship during the fall, winter or spring are usually part-time. Part-time internships can be anywhere from 8 to 30 hours per week. Ten to 15 hours a week is typical. Some summer internships are longer and full time.

    ARE INTERNSHIPS PAID OR UNPAID?

Paid internships are the most attractive option for students; however those who are serious about gaining real-world experience will also pursue unpaid internships. If you are unable to provide a salary, consider helping the student with internship-related expenses such as travel cost, bus pass, parking fees, etc.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BE AN INTERN?

In most cases, students who have completed at least 50% of their program’s required coursework or training are eligible to participate in South’s Internship Program.

WHAT TYPES OF INTERNSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE FOR CREDIT?

Currently, internships for credit are only available to students enrolled in South’s Professional/Technical Workforce Training Programs:

Professional/Technical Internships combine industry related experience with job search readiness skills building. Interns are typically students nearing graduation.
